Lee Hall Elementary School has a school zone with accompanying flashing lights, but there is no signage for where the school zone ends. This should be added to assist drivers for when they are allowed to speed back up to regular speed.

The Department of Engineering has received your concern and assigned it to a staff engineer for review and recommendations. If you would like to track the progress or be notified directly once the evaluation is complete please contact our office.
However, be advised that as per the Federal guidelines, “The end of an authorized and posted school speed zone shall be marked with a standard Speed Limit sign showing the speed limit for the section of highway that follows OR with an End School Zone sign.” Typically, in Newport News the typical is to post a speed limit sign at the end of the school zone.

City staff will review this location to make sure that the signage meets current standards. There are times when sign are missing and without observant citizens, we may not be aware of the situation. The federal government reviews signage regulations and make updates to the standards. Given the finical impact of certain changes, localities are not required to make a City wide conversion to the new standard at the same time but are required to replace the outdated standard with the current standard as part of the localities required replacement program or as those signs are damaged. I will pass your suggestion to the federal committee responsible for reviewing the standards and in the meantime make sure our sign plan for this school zone meets the current regulations.
